In The Community

Public Events

We hold events for the community such as our monthly Sunny Sunday breakfasts, which may also include equine related educational demonstrations; and the LeCompte/Kalaway Trailowner's Cup.

Our group rides annually in the Barrington 4th of July parade.  We proudly note that in 2009, RCBH won the "Spirit of Barrington Award" for the entry in the parade that best personified hometown dedication, ingenuity, originality and community pride.

We also provide workshops for local emergency providers to teach the basics of handling horses; put on equine events such as Hunter Derby, Gymkhana and Hunter/Jumper shows.

Independance Day

Roadside Beautification

We regularly participate in the Village of Barrington Hills semi-annual roadside clean up days, and hold our own annual clean up of the section of Rt. 62 running through Barrington Hills and assigned to our Club by IDOT.

Adopt a Highway

Volunteerism

We provide volunteer support for the Pony Club's two large horse shows, the Horse Trials and the Mini-Event, and for Friends of the Forest Preserves biennial Ignite the Night program.

In the past, we've organized Clean Up days at the Riding Center, and put on trail rides to benefit local horse-related charities. We raised money on horseback at Riding For A Cure; and have participated in Relay for Life as a team to raise money to fund cancer research. In 2011, the RCBH teamed up with the Pony Club and Oakwood Farm to create the "Riders for Life" team in the Relay for Life. The Riders for Life team was in the top ten fundraising teams that year.

Ignite the Night

Advocacy

We enjoy a good relationship with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County who have been advocates for equestrian trails for many years at the sites in and around Barrington Hills. Our members participated in the process of preparing the FPDCC 2013 Recreation Master Plan and the 2014 Trail Master Plan. We also advocate for equestrian trails on property owned by the McHenry County Conservation District.

Conservation Partners

Our Club has a rich history of supporting local conservation efforts in the community.   RCBH club members founded Spring Creek Stewards and the Friends of Spring Creek Forest Preserves in conjunction with the Audubon -Chicago region organization.   SCS and FSCFP protect and restore the serene beauty of the Spring Creek Forest Preserves through education, advocacy, volunteer initiatives and by reaching out to community groups with complementary interests.  Some of our members serve as Trail Watch volunteers.

RCBH was one of the groups that facilitated the 2006 intergovernmental agreement between the Barrington Hills Park District and the FPDCC by agreeing to maintain the trails of the Spring Creek Forest Preserve.  This ongoing RCBH responsibility including mowing and clearing is funded by member dues and Stirrup Cup donations.  The Forest Preserve trails which we continue to maintain are not only enjoyed by horseback riders but also by the hiking and bird watching public.

As a club, we've participated in conservation efforts of groups including the Spring Creek Stewards and Citizens for Conservation.  One example of a special project which we participated in was to broadcast seed from horseback in the Spring Creek Forest Preserve; a Friends of Spring Creek Forest Preserves event.  We also help with brush clearing.  Many will recall that former club president Peter Wessel was well-known for his eagerness to man a chainsaw to destroy invasive buckthorn in the Spring Creek Forest Preserve.

Support for Other Groups

We are members of several other conservation and equestrian related organizations, and we help publicize the events of the Pony Club, FRVH, BACT and local equine related charities at their request through our Facebook page, website and in our newsletter.

We've joined forces with other local riding clubs to help open 5 miles of public trails in McHenry County for walkers, horseback riders and snowmobilers at the MCCD Brookdale site. We've also helped raise money to create a permanent horse trailer parking lot.
